Chapter Six - Prairie Points with a Purpose

Sample # 1   stitching experimentation with prairie points

I used several automatic stitches with a specific colour scheme.  In many cases I used two threads in the needle and often the second thread was a metallic thread to give a glitzy sheen to the piece.  I also chose a particular colour combination In the first piece I used a red violet with the hue,  and two tints along with it’s complement, a vibrant yellow green (chartreuse).    Tension was just below 2.

Fabric – heavy cotton/ polyester used for curtains/ cushion covers with a blue and white stripe

Threads -   Korean Marathon threads  ….   PF 120012 / KB66165  - 100% rayon

1. deep red violet – colour # 2083   (also the bobbin thread)

2. light red violet – colour # 2072

3. yellow green – colour # 2002

4. yellow – colour # 2019

        -     metallic thread – WonderFil Art# 3142 – light green yellow – colour # 3840   - used with the deep red violet thread above

        -     100% rayon embroidery 120d/2 WonderFil – light green (no colour number listed)

         -     100% rayon embroidery 120d/2 Wonder Fil  Art # 3142  -  pale yellow – colour # 2113

Stitches  -   I used many automatic stitches with some variety in length of stitch from the automatic setting of the sewing machine.  If I found a row too dominating, I would go over the row with a toning down stitch and thread colour.  The bobbin thread (red violet) shows through in some of the stitches which helps to moderate the colour!  As an after thought, I should have added more rows below the leaf stitch on the white portion of the band.  This white band does dominate the piece and distracts from the elaborate stitching above!!!   (Also, I should have cropped the picture but I was unsure how to do this!!!)

Sample # 2  -  Creative Prairie Points – resolved sample #1

I2013-02-06 16.02.47

This drawing of my granddaughter’s was the inspiration for my resolved piece.  I tried to use the whole picture but found it too difficult to do a top and a bottom without the piece being too large!!! . I worked with paper patterns and I would have to stitch many strips of fabrics.  As it is, the piece is quite long.   So what I did was take the top part of the picture and create a row of red points  and then a row of orange points.  Then do a straight piece in yellow for the base to attach the points.  Not very creative in the end.  However, my stitching was very elaborate and colourful!!!!

Fabric    -  a piece of had painted cotton polyester from my stash!!!   I used the same piece for all three colours.  The orange and red were somewhat similar in the finished product but the yellow was distinctly different.

Threads   I started each section with a series of automatic stitches with often two threads in the needle using the main colour. Then I would add more stitches with often a metallic thread and sometimes a bit of another colour. For example, I used a variegated thread with a bit of blue to give a bit of variety to the red points. Also there is a row of yellow stitches in the red row that are in points to show the rays coming from the surface of the sun. The yellow band is stitched all in yellow. The heavy wavy bands of yellow are two different threads, one a polyester and one a shiny rayon. I then added lots of metallic gold to the whole yellow piece to give a sparkly look!!!
